Where is Errington Elementary?

Errington School is located at 9831 Herbert Drive in Richmond, BC. It is part of the Richmond School District # 38. The school is in the Richmond neighbourhood called Broadmoore. This area is located near the center of Richmond, only a few minutes drive to the city center or one bus with about five stops. The school was opened in 1959. We recently had our 50^th anniversary. About 15 years ago the school had an addition and some renovations done. This included a new office, staff room, library, computer lab, and 3 classrooms with washrooms (that became the kindergarten wing).

Library Service and Teacher Background

This assignment is going to focus on researching background information on the Errington Community, as well as all community helpers. This assignment will also look at weeding the collection of old, dated, broken, or unused materials and making suggestions for materials that can replace the weeded materials.

There will be four classroom teachers to benefit from this project and well as the 85 students in these grades. The classes that will benefit from this will be the students in divisions 6-9. These four classes are grades: K, K/1, 1/2, and 2/3. I have selected the Kindergartens as the focus for the IRP purpose, however these four teachers will teach this unit every year and all of them are either new or new to this grade level. One teacher transferred from ESL/resource and this is the first year in a class in a few years. Two of them have a couple years experience but are on their first continuing contract. The last one is an experienced teacher, but she has been teaching grade 4/5 for the past 5 years and is now grade 2/3. They are very happy to have this help.

When I am doing research projects like this for the younger students I will pull all the books and materials that are relevant for the teachers so they can use them in the classroom. This allows for the students to hear a story during library time, along with time for making a book exchange and learning about library skills. The library schedule is a fixed time every week. In order to get everyone in the computer lab, library, gym, and have prep coverage we need the fixed schedule. The library block comes as part of their prep period as designed by the school district. There is some time during library processing that I choose to pass up and assist the teachers in doing research in the class with their students or have them do that work in the library.

School Background Information

School Information

The following information is taken from my own knowledge from working at Errington School for 3 years. There are 9 divisions at the school with one class being a job share. There are: 10 classroom teachers, 2 ESL/Resource teachers, 1 music teacher, 1 teacher-librarian/ESL teacher, 1 Principal/resource teacher, 3 Education Assistants (EA), 1 hearing specialist, 1 counsellor, 1 secretary, and 1 janitor. The school population has been consistent at approximately 220 students for the past 3 years with the same forecast for next year.

Cultural and Financial Breakdown of the School

The following information is what I have witnessed from working there for three years. Much like the breakdown shown in the Richmond Statistics from the Canadian 2006 Census, there is a very large percentage of visible minorities at Errington school. All of the classrooms have a majority of ESL students. Many of them are level 4 or 5, therefore it is not always noticeable when speaking to the students, however, after seeing some written work it becomes more obvious that they are students that have only been in Canada for 4 or 5 years.

Financially, this is a very affluent area. The census stats state the median income in Richmond is just over $53,000 per year. However, we have many families in our school that have parents working in Asia and the child lives here with the other parent. A common price for a house in our school catchment is about $1,000,000. This is a house that is about 35-45 years old, so usually they are knocked over, and then a new house is built and sold for over $2,000,000. During my library book fairs I will gross well over $1500 in sales and the same amount of sales time at my old school would have a gross sales of $700. The teachers have had to hold onto students’ money as some of them have been known to bring up $500-700 to school. This is very unique, as the next subdivision over has social income housing and a completely different financial and social make up of the area.

ESL Service

With a high percentage of ESL students the school has created a system where the ESL level 1 and 2 students are always pulled out during the first 2 blocks in the morning. The rest of the teachers are doing their Language Arts programs at this time. This allows us to properly serve the students with the least amount of disruption to the classroom as possible. For the rest of the day the ESL/resource teachers are using their time in class assisting the students with their science and social studies. The ESL numbers are always changing as we adjust student’s levels during the year to best meet their needs. At writing time, there were 11 ESL 1 and 9 ESL 2 in the intermediate grades. There were 5 ESL 1 in grade 1-3 and no ESL 2. Almost every student in Kindergarten is a level of ESL. Most of each class is made up of ESL level 3-5. In each grade, there would be about 5 -7 students that do no have an ESL tag attached to them. There are approximately 160 students out of the 220 that are ESL.

Resource Service

There are a few primary students that are pulled out by the principal within the first 2 blocks at the same time as the ESL students. The rest of the students’ resource needs are met within the classroom when these teachers work with the students to assist them with their needs for their classroom work.

Possible Community Partners

Community Partners

This is a project based on community helpers therefore all local possible partners have been listed. Errington Elementary is very close to the city center in Richmond. It takes about five minutes by car, about 10 minutes by bus, or about 20 minutes walking to get to the city center from the school. The community partners listed below are included in this area.

Richmond Public Library – They visit our school at least twice a year and we go there once per year. This is an excellent opportunity for the students to see a much larger library and to learn more about how a librarian can help them.

Richmond RCMP – The RCMP are always willing to visit our school. We have two officers that are assigned to be liaisons with us. They come into our school every fall to teach the grade 5 students about the DARE (anti drug and alcohol program). When we do community helpers, the police officers are always one of the most popular helpers. They enjoy coming into the classroom to discuss their job and showing off their car to the students.

Richmond Fire Department – There is a community service fire fighter that has come into our school before to discuss fire safety. His job is to liaison with the schools. They are willing to visit us or to host tours of one of the fire department halls. The fire fighters are also very popular with the students.

Richmond Aquatic Centre – There are a number of pools in Richmond. There is an outdoor one (South Arm Pool) closest to Errington, but that is for summer only and there is the main one (Minoru Aquatic Centre) in the city center. Here the students can learn about lifeguards as a community helper.

Richmond Arenas – This community helper job here plays a smaller role, but there are skating instructors and Zamboni drivers at this facility. The students love the Zamboni. There are two city operated ice arenas in Richmond. Minoru is at the city center. The students usually go ice skating every year and they are welcome to learn about the jobs at the arena.

South Arm Community Centre – Although there are not many recognizable community helper jobs here, the facility as a whole would be good to show to the students as there is a gym, weight room, and games room.

Richmond Hospital – Doctors are another popular community helper and there is a hospital in the Richmond city center. A tour is probably not possible, but the hospital is close to the fire hall so the students can be shown the building.
